Food and Wine

It is fast becoming common knowledge that high life expectancy rates and the low incidence of chronic diseases in the Mediterranean are thought to have everything to do with diet. This website is devoted to Food and Wine of the Mediterranean, and to your health. Every region we describe in our regular feature will be paired with a few delicious recipes and a list of perfectly partnered wines. Yes, you can bet we'll cover the familiar (and not-so-well known) regions of Italy and France, but be sure to stay tuned for installments on cities in Portugal, Morocco, Turkey, Greece and the Balkans. And we won't forget the tasty bean dishes of Egypt or the honey wines of Africa, either.

Wine is an integral part of a Mediterranean meal on every coast, and is thought to be responsible for the relative cardiovascular health of people in those parts. From light, simple table wines to complex and more sophisticated "boutique" wines, we won't leave you to guess what goes best with Galinha Estufada (Portuguese Chicken Stew) or Kagitta Sardalya (sardines "a la turca"). Find links to regional vineyards and wine distributors after each recipe.

As for the food, part of the key to the superb tastes of these cuisines is a simple but well-selected list of ingredients. Cooking and preparation time for these recipes are largely fast because of the limited contents and light-oil cooking techniques. So, Cook Simply and Eat Heartily (and — may we say? &mdash drink heartily). That's a motto for our website that's entirely synonymous with a good life. Welcome to a new way of eating and living life fully!

Don't forget to check back regularly for recipes from new locales. Click on "Past Features" to see if your favorite regions in the Mediterranean have been covered by our site. And make sure you have time to go straight to the market when you're done reading!
